How do I make an llms.txt for my site?

This generator turns your answers into an llms.txt: a readable text file at a fixed address summarising in plain language what your site is and where the main pages live. No engine today commits to reading it, and it is worth doing for one reason that has nothing to do with engines — you have to write down in twenty lines what you are.

What do I put in, and what do I leave out?

    
Facts with a boundary in them. "Delivered quickly" cannot be lifted; "within two working days in Belgium" can, because it can be disproved. The same goes for your location, your opening hours and your specialism: the more precise, the more usable.

    
What you leave out: superlatives, mission statements and anything about feeling. Not because it is untrue, but because a model can do nothing with it — it cannot check it, so it does not repeat it.

  


  

    
Where do I put the file?

    
At the root of your domain, next to your robots.txt. With most hosting packages that means uploading a file into the same folder as your home page; with a site builder it is often a setting for static files.

Frequently asked questions

    
Does llms.txt replace my sitemap?
No, and they do different things. Your sitemap lists which pages exist and when they changed; this file says in plain language what you are. The first is read by search engines, the second by nobody obliged to — which is exactly why you sort the sitemap out first.

    
Can I put instructions for the model in it?
You can type them and nothing happens with them. A model does not follow orders from a file on a stranger's domain, and it would be a serious security problem if it did. What does work is factually describing what you are.
